SOIL - more than just dirt by Russell Attwood

by

Last Thursday, our Paulerspury Horticultural Society was treated to an enlightening journey into the hidden world beneath our feet, all thanks to the captivating talk by Russell Attwood on soil – more than just dirt.

Russell's presentation was nothing short of fascinating, revealing the intricate web of life that exists beneath the surface of our gardens. Who would have thought that soil, often overlooked as mere "dirt," is teeming with such richness and complexity?

One of the most intriguing facts Russell shared was Charles Darwin's fascination with worms, a passion that led him to study these humble creatures underneath the soil. Russell also shared the astonishing revelation that there is more worm mass beneath the soil than there is beef above ground – a testament to the vital role these tiny organisms play in the health of our soil.

As if the wealth of knowledge Russell shared wasn't enough, he delighted us with a visual feast of his own gardening prowess. His impressive beetroots, grown using the no-dig method, left us in awe of the potential hidden within our own soil. And let's not forget his delicious pumpkin scones, a delightful treat that perfectly complemented the evening's discussions.

Who would have guessed that Russell would have us singing about pumpkins before the end of the night? His infectious enthusiasm and genuine love for his subject made learning about soil an unexpectedly joyful experience we will not forget.

On behalf of the Paulerspury Horticultural Society, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Russell Attwood for his captivating talk. You've opened our eyes to the wonders beneath our feet and inspired us to delve deeper into the mysteries of soil. Thank you, Russell, for sharing your knowledge, your passion, and your pumpkins with us. We look forward to applying what we've learned and continuing our journey of discovery in the garden.

Happy gardening!
